Form, fill and seal machines form a wrap from film fed from a reel, insert product into the wrap and then seal individual packs using heat, pressure or ultrasonic welding. Flow wrapping machines as illustrated below form, fill and seal packages on a horizontal axis in continuous motion. They are also known as horizontal form, fill and seal machines in contrast with vertical form, fill and seal machines. They are commonly used for primary packaging of confectionery, biscuits and other bakery products. The example below shows the longitudinal seal on the package (called a fin-seal) formed below the deck plate. An alternative configuration of machine forms the fin-seal above the deck plate.
