Form, fill and seal machines form a wrap from film fed from a reel, insert product into the wrap and then seal individual packs using heat, pressure or ultrasonic welding. Vertical form, fill and seal machines as illustrated below form, fill and seal packages on a vertical axis with product dispensed from above. They are commonly used for primary packaging of dry goods, creams and lotions and small bulk items. The flow-wrapping machine performs a similar function with a horizontal configuration.

The example below shows a machine operating with intermittent motion. Machines with sealing and cutting heads in continuous motion provide higher output speeds.
